GD.FDTAEC (Guangdong food & Drug Technology Association for Evaluation & Certification) hosted a forum on the topic “AI and medical device technology innovation” on 17th July, 2020, aiming at accelerating the progress of safety regulation and promoting the development of AI-based medical devices. 

During this conference, officials, experts, entrepreneurs, and scholars from the government (e.g. Health Commission of Guangdong Province), colleges, industries recommended approaches to advance the development of medical devices in China. 

PVmed’s founder Dr. Yao Lu was invited as a guest speaker in this forum, and he shared his insights on the core algorithms of AI-based medical devices by giving a vivid introduction of how several major AI algorithms can empower medicine with profundity and an easy-to-understand approach. In order to inspire the audiences, he demonstrated some recent researches and achievements from his team, which covers the concepts as well as applications of relevant rising techniques like few-shot learning (deep learning with small sample size) and federated learning. 

In recent years, many AI applications although has served in medicine in various ways and bring convenience and efficiency to clinicians, problems in lack of data standardization and sharing, and business models are still challenging the industry. Not to mention the shortage of talents. This urges the need for the nation to focus on industry regulations and to invest in the interdisciplinary talents with extensive expertise in biomedical informatics, clinical medicine, data analytic, business management, etc.

Besides all the technical parts, the main message Dr. Lu wanted to deliver was that only providing clinical-center medical solutions with high accuracy and robustness can achieve standardized and intelligent medicine, facilitate the industry as a whole, and then benefit the patients and physicians ultimately. This is also what PVmed have been doing these years.
